For Grades K-6

Number Sense and the Landscape of Learning Workshop K-1:
Developing Place Value and Using the Arithmetic Rack to
Develop Addition and Subtraction Concepts
June 30 and July 1, 12:30-5:00
Workshop leaders: Bill Jacob

This workshop introduces the landscape of mathematical development in number and operation in grades K-1 including the big ideas, strategies, and representations that children need to progress from counting to understanding addition and subtraction facts and early place value. The workshop is introductory in nature and participants will leave with two Contexts for Learning Mathematics instructional units, The Double Decker Bus and Organizing and Collecting that they can use at the beginning of the school year.

Number Sense and the Landscape of Learning Workshop Grades 2-3:
The Open Number Line within the Context of Measurement
and the Development of Multiplication
July 2 and 3, 12:30-5:00
Workshop leader: Bill Jacob

This workshop introduces the landscape of mathematical development in number and operation in grades 2-3 including the representations that children need to develop addition, subtraction and early multiplication strategies. The workshop is introductory in nature and participants will leave with two Contexts for Learning Mathematics instructional units, Measuring Strips for the Art Show and Groceries, Stamps, and Measuring Strips that they can use at the beginning of the school year.

Number Sense and the Landscape of Learning Workshop Grades 3-4:
Developing Multiplication and Division Strategies
July 14 and 15, 12:30-5:00
Workshop leaders: Bill Jacob and John Siegfried

This workshop introduces the landscape of mathematical development in number and operation in grades 3-4 including the big ideas, strategies, and representations that children need to progress from early multiplication to examining the relationship between place value and division. The workshop is introductory in nature and participants will leave with two Contexts for Learning Mathematics instructional units, The Big Dinner and The Teacher’s Lounge that they can use at the beginning of the school year.

Number Sense and the Landscape of Learning Workshop Grades 4-5-6:
Introducing Fractions, Decimals and Operations
July 16, 17 and 18, 12:30-5:00
Workshop leaders: Bill Jacob and John Siegfried

This workshop introduces the landscape of mathematical development in number and operation in grades 4-5-6 including the big ideas, strategies, and representations that children need to make sense of fractions, equivalence, and operations with them. The workshop is introductory in nature and participants will leave with three Contexts for Learning Mathematics instructional units, Field Trips and Fundraisers,
The Mystery of the Meter and Best Buys, Ratios, and Rates that they can use at the beginning of the school year.

Note: Participants are welcome to attend one or two workshops. However, you must
submit two applications if you desire to attend both.

All four workshops are funded by a grant from the Educational Advancement Foundation and include academic year follow-up opportunities. Applications will be available in late April. For more information, email Monica Guzman at monica@math.ucsb.edu
