Calculus with Applications I

Math 3A - Fall 2005



Update:
There will be NO class on Friday Dec. 2. Instead there will be a make-up class on Monday Dec. 5 from 2 to 4pm at CHEM 1171.

The Classroom for the Final Exam will be CHEM 1171 (see below for more details regarding the final exam).
You need to have a Photo ID in order to take the Final Exam.

Course Description: Differential calculus including analytic geometry, functions, limits, derivatives, techniques and applications of differentiation, logarithmic and trigonometric functions. See the Class Schedule below for more details.

Prerequisites: Minimum Score of 32 on the Algebra Diagnostic Test. Not open for credit to students who have received Advanced Placement credit in calculus.

Office Hours: Mon. 9:00-10:00am, Wed. 9:00-11:00am and by appointment.

Textbook: Calculus (fifth edition), Stewart.

Grading: Homework & Quizzes 15%, Midterms 35%, Final Exam 50%.

Books, notes, calculators, scratch paper or collaboration will NOT be permitted on any of the exams or quizzes.

Midterms: There will be two midterms given in class on Oct. 14 and Nov. 9. Only the highest score within the two midterms will be counted for the final grade. There will be NO make-up exam for any of the midterms.

Quizzes: There will be three quizzes given during discussion section. Only the two highest scores will be counted for the final grade. There will be NO make-up date for any of the quizzes.

Homeworks: There will be a problem set each week, assigned in WebWork. I will send everyone the login and password to access the server by Monday Sep. 26. Please check your e-mail on that date. The first problem set (set 0) is designed to acquaint you with using WeBWorK. Your score on this set will not be counted toward your final grade. Please contact your Teaching Assistant for any question or concern regarding the use of WebWork. NO late homeworks will be accepted, but you are allowed to skip one homework set. The use of a calculator is allowed during the preparation of the homeworks.

Final Exam: The final exam will be held on Tuesday, December 6 from 7:30 to 10:30pm. Please note that the Classroom for the final exam is different than the room for the lecture (it will be announced here, as soon as it is available). The exam will cover all the material of the entire course. An incomplete may be assigned only for documented medical reasons.
