Textbook: Principles of Mathematical Analysis,
Walter Rudin
Course Description:
This is the first quarter of a year-long course in analysis, and
it is assumed the students are familiar with rigorous proofs.
The goal of the course is a solid foundation in analysis; the material we
will
we will cover this quarter will include real numbers, topology on metric
spaces,
sequences and series, continuity of functions, and possibly
differentiation.
Homework and Quizzes:
There will be approximately one problem set each week; the problems will
be posted
on the course website and should be turned in at the beginning of class on
the due date. The lowest homework grade will be dropped from your
average.
Please note that, although discussion of problems is allowed,
the written homework sets you turn in
are to be your own work and reflect your own understanding of the
material.
There will also be four or five short quizzes given in class,
often covering definitions, simple examples, or specific proofs. The
lowest quiz grade may
be replaced by your final grade.
Midterms:
There will be one midterm, tentatively scheduled for
Tuesday, Oct. 26th. Makeups will be given only for documented
reasons and only if you
contact me before the exam begins (except in emergencies).
Final Exam:
The final exam will be on
Friday, Dec 10th,
from 8-11am. An incomplete for the course will be given only for
documented medical reasons
or emergencies.
Grading:
Attendance & Participation: %5
Homework & Quizzes: 20% each
Midterm: 25%
Final: 30%
