Math 108A: Introduction to linear algebra. Fall 2020

Instructor: Stephen Bigelow. I would like to handle most communication on Nectir. You can also email me at <bigelow@math.ucsb.edu>. My office hours are Monday and Wednesday 11:00-12:00 (after class), and Thursday evenings 6:00-7:00, at my zoom.

TA: Ashwin Trisal. His office hours are Tuesday 1-2 and Thursday 1-3 at his zoom, with passcode 866570.

Lectures: MWF 10:00-10:50 at my zoom. I will post recordings of lectures, but try to attend live and post questions in the chat.

Text: Linear Algebra Done Right by Sheldon Axler, third edition. You can get a free PDF or inexpensive softcover from the UCSB library with your UCSB Net ID and password. For another perspective, you can look at "Linear Algebra Done Wrong" by Sergei Treil. There are also good textbooks by Hefferon, and by Friedberg, Insel and Spence, and many more.

Topics: The goal is to cover the first five chapters of the textbook. The main topics are: abstract vector spaces and subspaces, span and linear independence, basis and dimension, linear maps, the rank-nullity theorem, and eigenvalues and eigenvectors. Your proof-writing skills are more important than your ability to calculate.
