Math 145: Introduction to topology. Spring 2021.

Instructor: Stephen Bigelow. You can email me at <bigelow@math.ucsb.edu>. My office hours are 4:30-5:30 Wednesday, and 4:00–5:00 Thursday and Friday, in my zoom room.

TA: Seth Althauser. His office hours are 6:30–8:00pm on Wednesdays, and 2:00–3:30 on Fridays, in his zoom room.

Text: Introduction to Topology by Gamelin and Greene, second edition. For different points of view, I recommend topology textbooks by Mendelson, Munkres, or Adams and Franzosa.

Topics: The goal is to cover at least the first six sections of the first two chapters, including: metric spaces, continuity, topological spaces, and compactness. If we have time, we might cover some of: the classification of surfaces, Euler characteristics, and fundamental groups.

Classes: I will hold classes every Monday, Wednesday and Friday, 1:00–1:50, by zoom.

Exams: There will be an exam during class time on April 19 covering Chapter 1, and a final exam on June 9 from 4:00–7:00 covering the whole course.

Grading:  There will be frequent quizzes on Gauchospace, weekly homework submitted on Gradescope, and two exams. Your total score is 10% quizzes, 20% homework, 30% first exam, and 40% final exam.
