Calculus with Applications
Fall 2017
The basics

Calculus: early transcendentals,
Eighth Edition
(Hard bound ISBN: 978-1-285-74155-0).
If you have the wrong edition, it's probably fine.
- Topics
- We'll cover almost all sections of Chapters 1–4.
The main topics are:
limits and continuity,
derivatives and rules for computing them,
optimization,
the mean value theorem,
and curve sketching.

Grades

To compute your grade,
the following are curved and combined to give a percentage,
which is then converted to a letter.
- Some combination of i>Clicker and section: 10%
- Homework: 10%
- Exam on 10/23: 20%
- Exam on 11/20: 20%
- Final exam on 12/13: 40%

to every lecture.
Bad luck if you forget.
I will use it to take attendance,
get feedback,
and test your knowledge.

Attendance is mandatory, by department policy.
Your section grade is up to your TA.

You might be able to
switch discussion sections.
Do not drop and re-register.
You only need permission from both TAs involved.
Officially you will be in the original
section, but you will attend and be
graded in the new one.
- Homework
- Required homework
is done using WebWork,
available through
GauchoSpace
.
- Exams
- There will be two exams in class
on Monday 10/23 and Monday 11/20.
The final exam is on 12/13, from 8:00 to 11:00 in the morning.
- Bring a bluebook and a pen.
- If you miss a midterm or quiz for a legitimate reason,
it may be possible to get an average for missed work
based on the work you did.
There will be no make-up exams.

Rachel Zaragoza is in charge of issues related to enrollment.
You can visit her in the math office on the sixth floor of South Hall.
If you are on the waiting list,
you should do everything as if you were enrolled,
and hope for the best.
I do not have add codes
and cannot help with enrollment issues.

the Campus Learning Assistance Service.
- Incomplete
- If you cannot complete the course for a serious reason,
get a form from the math office,
fill it in,
and give it to the registrar before 4pm the day before the final.
