Text: I will be using "Single Variable Calculus - Early Transcendentals", 5th ed. by James Stewart for reference. However, since the homework in this class will be done online, you can use any standard calculus textbook, as long as you do use one! Some choices, along with chapter comparisons are given here. Notice that some of these texts are available online at a cheaper price.

Format:          Math 3A is the first course of a two quarter sequence in Differential and Integral Calculus.
A basic outline of the course is the following:
  • 1. Functions and Models (2 days)
  • 2. Limits and Derivatives (2-3 weeks)
  • 3. Differentiation Rules (3 weeks)
  • 4. Applications of Differentiation (2-3 weeks)

Tools:          ALEKS - ALEKS is an online teaching tool, which initially assesses your precalculus background, and then it goes into a learning mode where you can work to fill in any gaps on your own schedule. Do the initial assessment carefully and honestly. This will make your time spent with the tutorial more effective. I strongly recommend going through the ALEKS tutorial at your earliest convenience, which will insure that you have the necessary background before the class starts progressing in difficulty.

Thinkwell - Thinkwell Inc. provides a set of videos designed to supplement in-class instruction. The videos are designed to give a preview of the material before the lecture, and not to completely replace in-class lectures. You will be asked to complete a questionary on the effectiveness of the videos sometime in mid-quarter.

Homework: There will be regular weekly homework sets due every Tuesday at 11:59 pm, starting from 04/07/09. These will be assigned on webwork, where you will submit your answers as well. Your initial login and password for webwork is your perm number.
No late homework will be accepted!

Quizzes: You will have quizzes during each and every discussion session, which will be administered and graded by the TA. The two lowest scores on the quizzes will be dropped. No make up quizzes will be offered.

Exams: There will be two in-class midterm exams during the quarter, and a final exam at the end.
Exam 1 will take place on Wednesday, 04/22/09.
Exam 2 will take place on Wednesday, 05/13/09.
Final Exam will take place on Friday, 06/05/09.
All of the exams will take place in the lecture hall. Presenting a student ID with the completed exam is a must for your exam to be evaluated. NO formula sheets or calculators will be allowed during any of the exams. NO make-ups will be offered for the midterm exams. If a conflict prevents you from taking the final exam, you need to let me know of the compelling reasons by Tuesday, 05/26/09 (two weeks prior to the final exam).

Grading: Your final raw (percentage) score will be decided upon the quizzes, homeworks, two midterms exams, and the final exam. The break-up of the final grade is as follows:
Quizes (Q)- 5%
Homework (HW)- 10%
Exam 1 (E1)- 25%
Exam 2 (E2)- 25%
Final (F)- 35%
Thus, your final percentage grade can be computed by the formula (0.05Q+0.1HW+0.25E1+0.25E2+0.35F).
You are encouraged to discuss your progress in the course with the instructor at any time during the quarter.

Help: You are encouraged to utilize the following assistance services:
Math Lab - Free walk-in tutoring offered by the Math Department. It's open five days a week, 12 - 5 pm in South Hall 1607.
CLAS - Campus Learning Assistance Services, free tutorial services (sign-up online).
If you believe you have a physical, psychological, medical or learning disability that may impact your course work, please contact the DSP office at SRB 2120 and let the instructor know as soon as possible, so that proper accommodations can be arranged for your needs.
