Travel Logistics

  • Participants from outside California should fly into the Santa Barbara airport (SBA) by purchasing an economy ticket on a US air carrier, which can be reimbursed up to $600.
  • UCSB is very close to the Santa Barbara airport, and you can use the SBMTD number 11 bus from the Santa Barbara airport to reach the accommodations. The bus comes approximately every 30 minutes, and the bus ride takes 10 minutes. Get off the bus at either the UCSB North Hall Outbound or El Colegio & Stadium. From these stops, it is approximately a 15 minute walk to the Manzanita Village dormitories. One ride ticket on the bus costs $1.75. They accept cash ($1 bills and quarters, no change return) and Visa/Mastercard credit cards.
  • For the few participants who are instead flying into LAX, we recommend taking the Santa Barbara airbus to the final drop in Goleta. From there, it is best to take an Uber or Lyft to the Manzanita Village dormitories.
  • Participants with a home institution inside of California should travel to UCSB by car, bus, or train, which can be reimbursed up to $150. We will provide a way for participants to self-organize into carpools. The Flix bus, Santa Barbara Airporter bus, and Amtrak Surfliner train are good options.

Lodging

  • Lodging for participants begins at 12:00 PM on Sunday, July 20th, and ends at 2:00PM on Friday, July 25th.
  • We have reserved a dedicated “house" in UCSB’s Manzanita Village for summer school participants. The dormitory will lodge two participants per room. Shared bathrooms are available on each floor. We will provide a way for participants to self-organize into preferred roommate pairs as the date gets closer.
  • Participants can check in and check out at the main desk in Manzanita Village.
  • At check in, participants will be provided with a key tag, which they will present in Carrillo Dining Commons for their breakfasts and dinners. (See conference schedule.)
  • Bath towels, wash clothes, and bed linens will be provided.
  • The dormitory is right on the ocean. We recommend that all participants bring a beach towel to go to the beach :).
  • There is no air conditioning in the dormitory. However, since it is right on the ocean, it is typically cool at night.
  • Take care to not have any open food in the dormitory, since this can attract ants.
  • There are many shops within walking distance to purchase toiletries, such as toothpaste and shampoo, if needed.
  • Wifi can be accessed through Eduroam or UCSB Wireless Web. To connect to the Wi-Fi, choose “UCSB Wireless Web” from the network options and select “Guest Registration” under the credential login. Once you register, you'll receive an SMS/text message with a username and password, which is enabled for a seven-day connection.
  • The Manzanita Village front desk is staffed 24 hours a day and located in the Manzanita De Anza Resource Center. They can be reached at 805-893-6161. Please visit the front desk if you need to check out additional linens.
  • Parking permits can be purchased through the Transportation and Parking Services ePermit site. (Only eligible for reimbursement for participants traveling within California.)
  • Important rules and regulations for the Manzanita Village dormitory can be found here.
