Computational Materials

One of the great strengths at UCSB is Materials Science. It is imperative that we should capitalize on this strength in developing the CSE program, by addressing the problems in this area. Increasingly, this requires dealing with discontinuous problems at multiple scales, from quantum mechanics through molecular dynamics to continuum models. Fortunately we have faculty in this area (Maroudas, Hill), but the range of problems and potential for impact and interaction at UCSB is so great that we recommend for the future to expand this effort and to integrate it more fully into our educational and research program.
