POWERS Day registration is now open! Sign up here.

This year's POWERS Day will be on Saturday, April 20th 2024.

Program
All female-identifying middle and early high school students are invited to a day of fun STEM activities at UCSB! The UCSB AWM (Association for Women in Math) Student Chapter is hosting POWERS Day, which stands for Problem Solving for Women to Encourage Research in STEM. The activities will include fun with engineering, physics, math, and statistics. We'll have lunch at the lagoon and an opportunity to hear from undergraduate women majoring in STEM during the undergraduate panel. We aim to make role models available to girls and provide information about STEM workplaces to empower the next generation of women in STEM careers.

Registration
To register for POWERS day, please fill out the form. The event is free and includes lunch, but a $5 donation is appreciated to cover food costs. To make a donation, you will find the link in the registration form. We can accept up to 25 students. Registration will be first come first serve.

Location and Parking
We will start the day with a yummy breakfast in the Old Little Theatre, building 494 at UCSB. There are a few parking spaces right in front of the theater where parents can drop off students. Here is a link to an interactive map of the university where you can find the location of the building of the College of Creative Studies: map.ucsb.edu. The Old Little Theatre is attached to that building.

Funding for this event comes from UCSB's CCS (College of Creative Studies).

The Law of Averages with Doris Padilla (Statistics PhD)

Together we will put into practice the results stated in the theorem `Strong Law of Large Numbers, which "informally'' states that as the number of experiments increase, the more likely your sample observation will converge to the true value.

Tetris Tables and Relations with Mychelle Parker (Mathematics PhD)

In the game of Tetris, players use certain shapes to build and clear lines. A variety of this is called "Square Tetris". In this version of the game, players receive extra points for creating perfect 4x4 squares out of unbroken tetrominoes called monosquares. We will first try and see how many different ways there are to create monosquares. While attempting to count them we will ask the question "What does it mean for two monosquares to be the same?" The goal will be to give an understanding of what equivalence relations are.

Counting Cards with Professor Maribel Bueno (Mathematics)

While we play a card game called SET, we will learn some cool math tools that allow us to predict patterns within the cards.
