Program Administration

We propose that a Faculty member be identified as the Director of the Emphasis, to coordinate the management of curricula, the necessary articulation between participating departments, and to oversee the recruitment process. The Director would work with the Coordinating Committee to administer the Emphasis.

Some staff support (one half FTE) is requested to assist in the administration of the Emphasis, and to assist in the student recruitment and selection process. The Graduate Admission process is currently administered within the separate Departments. This will continue to be the case, but we will need to identify outstanding students from each Department who could be recruited into the CSE Emphasis, and to have a staff member of the CSE Emphasis who could oversee and facilitate that coordination.

Research and education in CSE requires a powerful computer. We are planning to write an equipment proposal to NSF to procure a PC cluster, but it should be noted that such a proposal will require a substantial amount of matching funds including the support of a person to maintain the machine. Currently, a cluster with 20 workstations and 3 PCs, along with ethernet switch and tape backup system, costs approximately $170,000.

Resources are needed to support the proactive recruitment of students, for a limited number of fellowships, and for a visitor/lecture series.
