For first-time set up of Octave, here is some helpful literature. Although it is specific to Windows OS, the same tips work with Mac OS using an application like TextEdit. After you have created a folder named "mfiles" in your Octave directory, and after you save your m-file on TextEdit, your file will be renamed name.m.rtf. Go back into the mfiles folder and manually delete the extension .rtf.
Teaching Statement

Outreach
I am also concerned with the diversity of STEM disciplines. I have worked for the SIMS program and Math Circle at UCSB. I have also worked for STEEM.
